DISPUTE AT GISBORNE.

(PBESS ASSOCIATION' TELEGRAM.) GISBORNE, November 9. Work on the waterfront was completely suspended to-day. Tho demand of the men was that they should have four men on the wharf to four men in the hold of the schooner Fairburn, as well as the man on tho bullrope. The Fairburn has a cargo of cement. At a meeting of the Disputes Committee, held yesterday afternoon, tho employers intimated that they would be prepared to consider the dispute, provided that tho men went back to work. The watersiders' representatives declined to recommend this courso. The Shipowners' Committee met .this morning to consider the waterfront position, and decided to issue an ultimatum to tho men that work on tho Fairburn must be resumed and thematter referred to the Disputes Committee, according to the terms of tho award, otherwise no labour will be engaged. At tho last call time, 4.40 p.m., all the men lined up, but no call was made. Mr Ronas, president of the Watersiders' Union, said it was possible, under the latest circumstances, that their future action would be determined bv tho watersiders' headquarters in Wellington. A meeting of the Shipowners' Committee this afternoon decided to commnnicnte with the employers' representatives in Wellington, with a request that the matter be taken up with the Watersidors' Federation at Wellington. The Ripple, from Wellington, arrived during the - afternoon, but the work of unloading was not commenced. Tho Mararoa, from Auckland, arrives _ tomorrow, but under present conditions no cargo will be worked.
