CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

METROPOLITAN MEETING

NEW ZEALAND CtJP DAY.

Carnival week begins to-day, and never in the history of the eagerly anticipated ovent have tho prospects looked po bright. For weeks the accommodation for visitors has been booked up, and people have been crowding .to Christehurch from both ends of the Dominion. Taken ail through the fields at Riccarton to-day will bo large, and so far no pronounced favourite lias been declared for either the Now Zealand Cup or the Stewards' Handicap, and it looks as if tho Cup will bo the best betting race ever known in tho history of the | event. The presence of Lord Nagar in the Spring Hurdle Handicap has rc- j duccd the field for that race to six. J Ho is one of the most brilliant jumpers ; that Riccarton people have ever seen. Granting that ho once held tho Australasian record for two miles over hur- 1 dies. Jack Symons and General Petain both jump well, and stay better, so they may gather the flying Australian beforo ho gets to the end of the sixteen furlongs. There are a good lot engaged in the Spring Plate. has worked so well since she arrived at Riccarton that I sho will go out a strong favourite. She is set to cany 7.2, but F. Tilley is sure i to claim the 51b apprentice allowance, which will give the Hallowmas filly a i dccided advantage. However, sho is meeting some well seasoned horses and j it will be no surprise if Adopted, Cashmere, Clirysostom, and the South Canterbury trained Royal Mac do not. make a race of it with her. Kilrush. will not be a runner in tho New Zealand Cup, but all the rest will face the barrier, and never have trainers of Cup candidates been so confident as to tho chances of their respective representatives. The Welcomo Stakes field is a good one, when it is understood that owners do not consider their prospects of beating tho unbeaten Mermin very bright, but as sportsmen they are willing to take on what they consider ia <very forlorn hope. None of the Stewards' Handicap candidates has failed to stand tho strain of the last few days, and it should be one of tiio greatest sprints ever seen at Riccarton. On their track form Arrowsmith, Surveyor and Trespass will probably be well backed. but a number of others have done great frork and will receivo plenty of support. The first race is timed to etart at noon. 'Special train and tratn services have been arranged. Tho day's card is as follows: — 13 Noon.—SPRING HURDLE HANDICAP, of 300 sovs. 2m. St. lb. St. lb.
