. o— : Mr C. J. Hnrloy arrived overland from Nelson yesterday. It is understood that Sir William Herrics leaves for England in January, and hopes to return about the middle of the 1922 session. Mr Arnold Conway, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Hugh Conway, of Islington, who has for some years, been on the Wellington office staff of the Minister of Education, has been appointed private secretary to the Native Minister, the Hon. I>r. Pomare. The following have been appointed Justices of tho Peace in Canterbury:— J. V. Chapman, W. Ait-ken, J. F. Buchanan (Little River), E. H. Andrews, A. F. Drayton, A. L. Gee, H. F. Herbert, A. "H. Hobbs, F. H. Labatt (Christchurch), J. Carroll, R. Lochhead Scargill), W. J. McEvedy (Southbridge), H. Neeve (Leoston), R. Patterson "(Lakeside), W. O. Rennie (Doyleston), R. M. Robertson (Leeston). Mr L. W. Bourke, who has been promoted from Chief Postmaster at Greymouth to Superintendent of Telegraphs at Christchurch, was farewelled by the members of the Greymouth staff on Wednesday evening. Mr G. Pratt, on behalf of "the officers spoke in complimentary terms of Mr Bourke's very able administration during the short period he was located on the Coast, and, in congratulating him, and wishing him good luck in his new sphere of labour, presented him with a travelling rug and fountain pen as a slight token of the esteem in which he was held by the staff of the chief post office.
