THE ARREST OF MATTHEWS.
A good deal of interest and some littlo excitement was caused at the Wellington ferry wharf on Tuesday morning on the arrival of the Slaori from th* South (says the "New Zealand Times"). When tho vessel had berthed the passengers -ivere temporarily prevented from landing, and n number of police officers went on boar-j. By and by the passengers were allowed to lane), and some little time later the officers of the law, escorting a young man, came down the gangway, entered a motorrcar, and drovo to tho contra! station. It subsequently transpired. that, after tho arrest of Matthews, in connexion with the Tiniaru murder, on Tuesday night at Lyttolton. he represented that another man who occupied a cabin on tho Maori with him was an accomplice. The (Wellington police were acquainted by telegraph, and according l }" tho young man was detained on the arrival of tlu» vessel here. However, although _hs boarded the vessel at the same tin» as Matthews, he was ablo to_ give a satisfactory explanation of his identity, und 'his movement?, and ho was no longer detained. Constable Templfiton, who was shot ov the prisoner Matthews in the fracas a T - Lvltelton on Monday flight, is making very satisfactory progress towards recovery in the Christchurch Hospital. !
