6— . VISIT TO THE SOUTH. General Sir William Birdwood went ■south yesterday morning. He is due back in Christchurch on the 19th inst., and will leave again on the 22nd inst. for the West Coast. General Birdwood was welcomed at Ashburton by the Mayor, Mr Galbraitli, Colonel Studholmo, and Major Orr, on the Main South road. He motored to the trotting meeting, and witnessed the Longbeach Handicap raco. Later ho attended a' civic reception in the town, and received an enthusiastic greeting from a large crowd. At the visitor's request, a whole holiday was granted to the school children to-day (Friday). After luncheon General Birdwood went south bv the second express.
