MAGISTRATE'S COUET. Mr S. E. McCarthy, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. A juvenile, charged with damaging the telephone cabinet in Dublin street, to the extent of 10s, was convicted ?nd oidercd to come up for sentence when railed upon. Thomas Buchop (Mr C. E. Thomas) was charged with stealing, at Little Port Cooper. moki net, valued at i' 3, the property of ?'orman Win. Scott. Accused was convicted and lined ~0, in default on© month's imprisonment. David Hildvard (Mr C. E. Thomas) was charged with having- procured liquor on fivo different occasions during the currency of a prohibition order. He was convicted and ordered to como up for sentence when called upon, and his order, which expired on July 19th, was renewed for twelve months. • " Albert Footc, for a first breach of a prohibition order, was fined £2 and costs. Thomas Bachop (Mr Thomas) and John Austadd, charged with casting offensive matter on tli9 footpath, ivcrfc each fined £2 and costs. ' Henry George Scott, barman at the Canterbury Hole), was charged with supplying liquor to a man already in a state of intoxication. Mary I{eid, licensee of the Canterbury Hotel, was charged with haying, through her barman, Scott, supplied liquor to a person alreadv in a state of in toxica \ lion. She was also charged with permitting drunkenness. Mr Thomas appeared for both defendants, and a plea, cf not guilty. Tho cases wero dismissed. LICENSING COMMITTEE. The Lyttelton Licensing Committee held its annual meeting yesterday. Present— Messrs McCarthy, S.M. (chairman), F. G. Norton, P.. Knights, Orton Bradley, W. S. Mitchell, and J. Richardson. The following transfers were granted:— Saxon Hotel, Annie Elizabeth Brooking to John Rea: Metropole Hotel, Henry James ■Bell to Albert Wm. Harry Nickclls; Bruce Hotel, William Robinson to Charles Wm. Burland; Koyal Hotel, P. B. Carmichael to Ivor man McDonald.
Renewals of publican's licenses were-grant-ed to Myrtle Alico Maud Hill (Empire), Francis Shelton Andrews (Albion), Henry James Potton (Wharf), Jack Douglas McGregor (Heathcote Arms), Peter Bainford (Ocean View), and James Smith. Vial (Madeira). X/icenscs were renewed also to Jolrn Barry, jun., Lyttelton Hotel; Harold William Webb, British Hotel; James' Hound, Heathcote Val]ny Hotel; Sidney William Dean, Marine Hotel: Kate Kennedy, Cave Rock Hotel; and Charles Edward George Samuels, Somerset Hotel. An accommodation license wa* granted to Thomas Fairbairn, of the Wlieatsheaf Inn; Tho application, of Thomas Wilson, of the Grand Hotel, for a renewal of the license, was adjourned for three months to enable tho construction of fire escape. 1 - lit the hotel to bo completed. Daniel Wiireham, of the Mitre Hotel, for whom Mr C. S. Thomas appeared, applied for a renewal of the license. An adverse police report regarding the hotel had been placed before the committee. Tlio ri' t K>rt complained of the character of the men who had been employed by tho licensee as barmen. Mr Thomas stated that 0110 man who had been mentioned in the report as having been convicted of obstructing the police, had committed the offence after leaving the employ of "Wareham. Senior-Sergeant Jackson had, in a report, eta-ted that the running of tho house had been greatly improved during the last ouarter. Mr McCarthy said that the committee was not satisfied with conditions in tJie past regarding tho Mitre Hotel, but was glad to ee© an improvement, although it .was not altogether satisfied with th". condition of the premises. It considered that they required renovating. The application would be ad- ! journed for three nion-ths. } In respect of the renewal of a license to Mary Keid. of the Canterbury Hotel, Mr W. jA! D. Banks, cWk to 'lie comniitt n e, stated that the hotel had been ordered to be rebuilt. Mr C. S. Thomas supported nn ap : ■plication for a license for temporary premises. The application for a license wsa granted, and the application for renewal was 1 adjourned for three months.
