AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION.
* The Council of the Canterbury Auto mobile Association met last night, Mr J. S. Hawkes presiding. . In reply to a letter from the South Island Motor Union it was decided to slate that tie Association approved of a tax on tyres for tho improvement of roads. The lioads Committee were appointed to meet the Paparua County Council on July Ist, in reference to unbridged water-races ia the county. Colonel P. C. Fen wick, Offlcer-in-Chargo of the Chalmers military hospital, wroto stating how much tho soldiers' car had been appreciated, and tho great benefit it had been to the patients of the hospital. They conveyed to tho Automobile Association their deep appreciation of tho constant kindness and courtesy of the Association, not only in the provision of tho soldiers' car daily, but in the Association's constant readiness to find cars among their members on all special occasions. The readiness of the »members of the Association to give their own personal services on such occasions had been very deeply appreciated by everyone concerned. The Association placed on record its appreciation of tho work done by Mr A. S. Clarkson> chairman of tho Soldiers' Car Committee, and its thanks to the New Zealand Farmers' Cc-op. Association for garaging the car free of co3t. Tho following new members were elected: —G. Murray, W. Wells, A. W. Harris, Julius Caesar, F. Hi°rgs, F. J. Horrell, A. M. Emmett, H. H. Wawchop,, Joe Taylor, F. Townsend, F. Chamberlain, C. Maginness, J. E. Barton, J. B. Steel, L. A. Dougall, J. E. Watson, A. K. Hadfield, H. Vale, H. J. Crothers. The chairman said the membership of the Association was now over 1600.
