The Women's Auxiliary of the Navy League gavo a small dance last night for "tho cadets of the Woodarra, tho British India training ship now in port. Tho affair took place in the Navy League hall, which was prettily decorated for the occasion, and a very enjoyable evening was spent by all present. i The members of tho New Brighton j branch of tho Women's Christian TemI peranco Union met at tho residence of Mi's EL Hall, Eexley, on Tuesday afteri noon, to bid farewell to Mrs Frank Thompson. A'lusical items wero contributed by Alesdamcs Dey and Nelson, Misses Bailantyne, Spratt, and Hall. Alesdames Hall, Bellamy, and Walker spokd in terms of appreciation of the work done by the guest, and expressed regret at her departure from the district. Airs Thompson suitably responded, and, 011 behalf of the members, was presented with a silver vase and trinket jjox. Afternoon tea was served, and a very enjoyable time spent. She received bur early training as a general and maternity nurse in Glasgow, and, after several years of district nursing, she emigrated to New Zealand. Settling in Ashbutron, she speedily established a reputation for professional skill, and her kindness of heart endeared her to many people. She died far from her relatives in Scotland, but she has left in Ashburton many friends who- will nhcrish the memory of an unselfish, helpful, sad devoted woman. Tho Y.W.C.A. has this winter arranged for a course of studies in citizenship £or women. These studies will tako the form of an introductory adI dress followed by general discussion of i tho subject. They will deal with tho conditions under which women and girjs work; the opportunities for women to undertake responsibilities in the community ; the laws relating to women and children. There will be five studies held fortnightly, commencing to-day at ( 2.45 p.m., at the Y.W.C.A. Buildings, ' Latimor square. They are open to any woman interested in these matters. A very pleasant social gathering was held in tho Sc. Albans school, on Tuesday evening, when the members of tho scfiool committee and their wives, the school staff, and a number of friends met together, to bid farewell to Aliss Newman, who, owing to her approaching marriage, is severing her connexion with the touching profession. Air Sutli- , erland (headmaster) in presenting Aliss Newman with a silver hot-water jug ; and entree dish, on behalf of the_ staff and committee, eulogised the recipient ■ as a teacher and as a friend, and wished ] her every happiness in her new sphere , of life. The annual report of the Plunket ' Society presented at the annual meet- : ing yesterday, stated that the branch j had sustained a severe loss in the death of Airs W. AY. Alorton, who had ' been president almost since it was ' founded. Tho enthusiasm which she ( brought to tine Society in its early days t showed no slackening as the years went ' oil, and to the very last she was exert- 1 ing herself in its service. WOOD—AXDERSON. Yesterday afternoon, at St. Saviour's Churili, Sydenham, the marriage was celebrated of Miss Kathleen Muriel Anderson, only daughter of Dr. and Mrs I Richard Anderson, of Colombo street, and Air Walcot Brett Wood, eldest eon of Mr and Mrs Walcot Wood, of Ranfurly street, St. Albans. The Rev. W. I P. Hughes officiated, the ceremony being choral, and the church was artis- ' tically decorated, a beautiful wedding bell being suspended over the briuai pair. The bririe, who was given away | by .her father, looked very lovely in her ! wedding gown of white sou pie satin j and crepe georgette, simply fashioned, j and with a train of white brocade lined ' with georgette, ajid finished with tassels ; falling from the shoulders. A tulle l veil, worn with a circlet of orange bios i soras, and a shower bouquet of choice j white flowers, completed a lovely toilette. The bridesmaids, Miss Eileen ! Wilson, Miss Marian Wood, and Miss ; Jainieson, were frocked in pale pink ' satin trimmed with marabout. The regular meeting of tho Selwyn NurMnt; Division was held on Tuesday eveniug in the St. John Ambulance rooms, under Aliss Harmrn, lady superintendent, Airs K. H. Smith, first officer, Airs C. J. Jones, second officer, and Airs A. Al. Middleton, third officer. Major Arthur h. Gray, district superintendent. Airs G. AY hitc, lady corps superintendent, and Dr. F. J. Borrie, divisional surgeon, were also present. The results of the sub-district competition held last Saturday -were received and exhaustively con.side rod, _ the two teams entered by the division being placed ser'ond and third. It was unanimously decided by all present to hold a seven days' rally, for the purpose of getting new members for the division and the Association. A sub-committee, consisting of Aliss Hiirmm, Mrs C. J. Jones, Air? H. H. Smith. Airs Bell, Airs Sowerby, and Aliss AfcCallum. was sot ut)' to carry out certain of the rally and the reports of the committee, and the new members are to be presented at the ambulance rooms nest.
