e PRISON LABOUR NOT A SUCCESS. (srECIAL TO "THE THESS.") WELLINGTON, June 9 The Government has decided to stop the use of prison labour for tree-plant-ing. The Forestry Department finds that "it can do better with ordinary labour ,_ while tho Prisons I)opartment recognises that tho cost of keeping up small prison camps for tree-planting is excessive. double saving will be effected ly the new method, and the few prisoners, who were engaged in tree-planting will be put to some still more useful occupation, either on the prison farms or at various trades.
