—6 MINISTER AT Y7AIROA. (press association telecram.7 WAiIIOA, Juno 7. The Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Pubiic Works, arrived in Wairoa last night. This morning he met a number of deputations. He said it had been decided to nroceed with the Waikaremoana hvdro-elentric scheme immediately. The* Waikokopu railway had alreadv been started, and would be pushed on expeditiously. The East Coast railway was also being hastened. He considered that the contract system should be adjusted against day labour. Where co-operative contracts were required, he would see that the men got either large or small contracts, according to their requirements. The shortage of material was very serious, and hampering operations everywhere. Girder, hardwood, and cement were in particularly short supply. Contractors would not come from other countries to New as the works were too small. He did not intend to give large sums of money by way of subsidy to country roads, except to assist the main arterial roads.
