IRISHMEN AND ORANGEMEN.

TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS. 5 ' Sir, —In Saturday's issue of "Tho Press,'' under tho above heading, 11. Kelleher lashes out at tho bigoted Orangemen of Wanganui for passing a resolution of some kind. I did not seo the resolution so passed, but as Mr Kelleher has used tho epithet four times, I should like to asli him if ho knows tho meaning of tho word, and if it is applicablo in this case. My dictionary tells mo that a bigot is one who 1 is "unreasonably devoted to a creed or sect." tXow can he provo that tho Orangemen deserve that title? I was 1 once shown tho rules of tho institution, and tho very first clauso in the rules was this: "The Loyal Grange Institution will not admit into its brotherhood persons who from an intolerant spirit ! seek to persecute, injure, or upbraid any man on account of religious opinion." Now, this does not look like beiny "unreasonablv devoted to a creed or sect." I think I can safely tell R. Kelleher that there aro tens of thousands of King . George's subjects who : are not Orangemen, who aro deadly op- ' 1 posed to Home Rule on the lines req\iir--1 j ed by that bigoted and intolerant crew ' known as the "Sinn Feiners."—Yours, ' ctc., ; ' A. J. BISHOP. 162 "Wordsworth street. 1 June 7th, 1920.
