PROHIBITION IN AMERICA.
4 ."WETS' " LAST HOPE GONE. (By Cable—Press Association —Copyright.) (Rcuter'3 Telegrams.). NEW YORK, Juno 7. The last hope of the "wets" has been destroyed by the decision of the : United LStates ; Supremo Court uphold- j ing constitutional prohibition. The decision means that the Volstead Act, ! prohibiting the sale of any beverage containing one-half of one per cent, or j more of alcohol must bo enforced in j every State regardless of whether that ; State individually ratified the amend- j ments to the Act. The State laws, j allowing an alcoholic content, as enact- j od in New Jersey, Wisconsin, and j Rhode Tsland, are nullified. I The decision dispels the hope of the j brewing interests that their properties ! could manufacture light beer and wines. The result is regarded as a ; complete victory for the prohibition j forces, settling for all time the question j of the legality of the Volstead amendment. PETITIONS DISMISSED. (Received Juno Bfch, 11.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 8. The Supremo Court, to-day swept I aside every contention raised against j the constitutionality of the Volstead j Prohibition Enforcement Act and the : validity of the National Prohibition , amendment to the Federal Constitu- ■ tiou - . i.- ! The Supremo Court dismissed a peti- j tion by Rhode Island seeking to have j Federal officials enjoined from enforcing prohibition in that State. j The Court also dismissed an applica- > tion for an injunction brought by New j | Jersey to prevent the enforcement or j ! prohibition within that State. this j decision also involved appeals from . j Massachusetts, Kentucky, Wisconsin, j and Missouri.
