4 FATALITY IN A STEAMER. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) MELBOURNE, June 7. Upon her arrival from New Zealand the Union Company's steamer Kamo was .fumigated. Subsequently Carter, tho chief steward, and Nixon, the watchman, were asphyxiated in the engineer's cabin. They apparently had closed the door owing to the cold before the fumes had escaped. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) " MARTOiN, June 7. Miss Barker, Principal of Ngatiawa Girls' School, was found in a state of collapse in a bathroom this morning, and died shortly afterwards. WELLINGTON, June 7. William Fitzgibbon, a fireman, fell from the "Glasgow Wharf early oh Saturday night, and some time later w.is found crushed between his ship, the Canadian Importer, and the wharf. ■Ho is believed to have been lying in that position for about three hours. When admitted to tho hospital at about 11.30 p.m., Fitzgibbon was in a collapsed condition, and suffering from shook. There was a big bruise about tho base of the si>ine, and it was found that he had sustained a fracture of the pelvis. ASHBUHTON, Juno 7. Harry Flatman, while motor-cycling from Vnletta with a pasenger in a sidecollided with a horse and trap at Westerfield on Saturday evening. Flatman was travelling in the fl centre of the road, and, in endeavouring to clear the vehicle, the driver of which appeared to have lost his head, struck tho j trap broadside on. IXVERCARGTLL. June 7. A young nihn named Herbert Tinker, a recent arrival from Home, missed a * step when descending a steep staircase and fell to the bottom, sustaining a fractured skull. Ho died without regaining consciousness, deceased, who had four years' war service, has relatives m Oamaru.
