AN OBJECTIONABLE POST.
: traffic control device ! CRITICISED. J "What is that objectionable post at . tho street corner just outside ?'' asked Cr. McKellar at the meeting of the , City Council _ last night. He was re- '■ ferring to the traffic control post ''Keep ! to the Left,'' planted in the middle of | tho intersection of Worcester street and ■ Oxford terrace. "It is causing a. good • deal of congestion and traffic difficulties," he added, -"and I would like to • know who ia responsible. Is it the Works Committee or tho By-laws Committee?" The Deputy-Mayor: I don't think it ! is either, 'lhe Mayor discussed tho matter with me alter ordeis were given , to erect tho pole. A councillor: By whom? . The Deputy-Mayor: The Mayor, in pursuance of his sciiemo of trying to regulate traffic, gave instructions to tho city surveyor to erect that post. That is ail 1 knew about it. Cr. McKeilar: Has the Mayor power to do these things? There are commit-tees-set up to deal witli such matters. Cr. Armstrong: He is all powerful. Cr. McKellar: I take it tho Mayor is not a maker of laws. The Deputy-May.u-: I don't think it's hardly fair to disjuss the matter when ' the Mayor is absent. Cr. Agar: Wno is accepting the liability for accident in the meantime? If the lights failed and somebody ran into tho post, tho Council would be liable. I, as a member of. the Council, refuse to accept that liability. I think the post should be taken down at once. Cr. Agar proposed that the Council should give- instructions to the City Surveyor to have tho post removed in the morning. Cr. Hunter seconded the motion. Cr. Herbert claimed that something of the sort as tho post objected to was nceessary in the city. The post might be in the wrong place, but "that could be remedied. The Deputy-Mayor: I am a little diffident in taking this motion, although I am bound to take it. I can put the elfect of the motion before tho Mayor in the morning. Cr. Harper: Is the pest temporary or permanent? " j The Deputv-Mnyor: Temporary. : Cr. Harper": Well, give it a trial for a month. The Council decided to refer the mat- ( ter to the By-laws and \7orks Commit- j . tee, with power to act. I ? ■ ;
