OBITUARY. Mr J. Wood, who had been a member oi to Lyttelton Waterside Workers' Union foi' the past forty years, died tit his home, lsrendhl-y road, yesterday. He was _at one time president, and subsequently oscame secretary of the union, and was greatly respected byg his fellow-members. Ho was an active trades' unionist, and a m-ember of tiir-. Rationalists' Association. He leaves a widow and a grewn-up family. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Borough. Council met last levelling. Present: Tli-o Mayor (Mr Vv'. T. Lester), Cns (\. Morris, J. J. Gov.cr, J. 11, Collins, W. *J. Elliott, J. T. Norton, G. Whitford, M. J. Miller, F. G. Norton, aud J, R. Webb. The Hawera Borough Council asked the Council to support a motion requesting the Government to remove tho duty on children's footwear. It was decided to support the motion. The Stratford Borough Council forwarded copy of a resolution asking the Government to declare Saturday a universal half-iio'id-iv throughout the Dominion. It was agreed io support the resolution. The Cromwell Borough Council wrote asking tho Council to support a motion urgine: thj Government, on account of the high price of leather goods, to re-impose tho embargo on tho export of hides. It was decided to allow the letter to lie on the table. The general manager for tho Now Plymouth Borough Council forwarded a copy of a report to his Council in which ho recommended that the Government should bo asked to permit the Stato Advances Office- to make loans to local bodies of a greater amount than £10,000 per year, which is tho present limit, and that all loans raised by local bodies ehould necossarilv carry a substantial sinking- fund. Referred to tho Finance Committee for consideration and report. Miss IT. Toomey was granted two months' leave of absence, the appointment of a, relieving clerk be-ins lef'* to the Mayor and town clerk. Tho borough engineer was instructed to carry out improvements to the abb-atoir yard forthwith. • I I ' I
