The railwaymen's award grants increases ranging from 2s to Ss G<l per woe]?. The Board recognises that muca cf the work requires high efficiency, but the advance of £1 per week n'.e.i was demanded would involve increase l;I railway charges of 110 per cent, a o.c pre-war rates. The report of the National Wages Board on the claims submitted bv tlie railwavmen for an increase or ~l P week, grants advances varying irom to 8s 6cl i*r week for different grades in suburban districts, and 2s to «is t>u per week in rural districts. _ These increases are in addition to tlie extra 2s per week under the sliding scale arrangement. The men's claim in respect to overtime, nnd Sunday and night duty, are rejected. The sliding scale gives an automatic increase of Is per week for every ine points that the cost of living advances according to the Board of Trade s periodical returns. GAS WORKERS' THREAT. LONDON, June 4. The entire country is threatened with a gas workers' strike for higher wages. A ballot among the workers overwhelmingly favoured a stoppage of work on June 26th.
