SECONDARY SCHOOLS.
MINISTER AND TEACHERS CONTER. A conference between the Minister of Education (the Hon. C. J. Parr) and his officers and four headmasters and eight assistants of secondary schools has been sitting in Wellington. On Friday afternoon the conference discussed the matter of classification, and on Saturday morning the Minister said that a satisfactory recommendation as a basis for a scheme had been arrived at. He added that on Saturday morning tho conferenco discussed the method of making appointments, and decided to adhere to the present system under which local boards make the appointments after consultation with tho headmaster concerned. The conference also decided on tho constitution of the classifying committee, and laid down that the average throughout schools should be one teacher to 28 children. The Minister indicated that under this proposal for staffing he would probably bo, able to adjust matters so as to give some increase in salaries.
