OBITUARY.
MR ALFRED GREENFIELD
A wcll-lcnown. early settler in the person of Mr Alfred Greenfield died on Monday at his' residence, Tory street, Nelson, at the advanced age of !>1 years. . The late Mr Greenfield was born at Goswell road, Islington, London, England, and was the fourth son of Mr Thomas Greenfield, solicitor. He sailed in 1851 for New Zealand in tho barque Clara, with Captain Eraser and family, and landed at Nelson. He followed farming pursuits for a time, and subsequently accepted a position as clerk to the first Superintendent of Nelson (Sir "William Stafford), commencing his duties on January Ist, 1854. This saw the commencement <-f Mr Greenfield's striking career in the Provincial Government. He soon became Provincial Secretary and Provincial Treasurer, Immigration Secretary, Sheriff, Commissioner of, Crown Lands, Provincial Auditor, Agent for the Crown under the Westland and Nelson Coal Fields Act, 1877, Justice of the Peace, Warden of the Nelson South-West Goldfields, Stipendiary Magistrate r a member of the Board ol Education to represent tho Provincial Government; Provincial Auditor of Road-Board Accounts; member of tho Hospital Board of Management; Judge of Assessment Court; Commissioner of Crown Lands for Nelson; Commissioner uncVr Land Claimants' Ordinance; Stipendiary Magistrato at Clyde, Thames; four times relieving S.M. at Wellington; Warden at Westport and Palmorston North; Chairman Wardens' Conference re Amendments to the Mining Act; Chairman' Nelson School Commissioners. Two sons—Mr Frank Greenfield, of the Survey Department, Christchureh, and Mr Fred. Greenfield, of Wanganui—and two daughters—Mrs Kidd, of Kiwitea, Feilding, and Miss Bessie Greenfield, of Nelson —are left to mourn their loss. Mrs Greenfield pro-deceased her husband in 1914.

AUCKLAND, Juno 4. The death occurred at the Auckland Hospital to-day of Major George Melville Burlinson, late superintendent- of the Weraroa Training Farm, in his 66th year. Prior to going to Weraroa, ?»lajor Burlinson was at tho Caversham Industrial Scool, Dunedin.
The death occurred at Wellington on Sunday of an army veteran, Mr I>avid Kennedy, formerly of Dundee, Scotland. As a young. man the -late Mr Kennedy was in the 42ik1 Highlanders, and saw active servicc abroad. At the Ashanti war he was with that portion of the famous Black Watch .Regiment chosen t.r> assist the explorer, the lata M. Stanley, in his search for Emin Pasha. Mr Kennedy spent the later years of his life in this Dominion, though being still keen to "do his bit," he twice journeyed to his native country during thy great war to do,war work. Mr Kennedy leases a widow and a- family of three daughters and three sons, one of the latter being Mr Peter Kennedy, of Christchurcli.
A Press Association message from F'cilding states that Mr G. N. Shannon, Government Customs expert* (retired), and a prominent settler in the district, died yesterday morning. His wife predeceased him bv six years. He leaves a large , grov."n-uo familv.
Tho death occurred in the Dunedin Hospital ci Fireman Henry Cornwell, a member of the Dunedin-Fire Brigado. He was a returned soldier, having served for four years in France with the New Zealand Tunnelling Corps. He had been attached to the Duuedin Brigade for about twelve months. Kc was a native of Portsmouth and a cousin of Jack Cornwell, the IS aw hero, who gained the V.C. afc the Battle of Jutlarnd. Ho had no relatives in -New Zealand. Three of his brothers were killed while on ac-tive scrvico with the British Army during the great war.
