PRICE OF MILK.
EOAED OF TRADE'S ATTITUDE,
In reply to the request of the Christchurch Dairymen's Association that an onquiry should be he'd into the position regarding tho wholesale price of millc, which was fixed by the Board of Trade at Is 3d per gallon, Mr H. Bliss, jun., president of the Association, received the following telegram yesterday from Mr McDonald, chairman of the Board:
"Ro price of milk. —No good purposo can be served by further enquiry; price one and threepence on the farm, wholesale, seems reasonable ]>ending arrangements in regard to butter prices." To this telegram Mr Bliss sent a, reply as follows;—" Dairymen regret very much the attitude you have taken, and will be sorry if they are forced to break the law, but cannot ]K>ssiblv supply at Is 3d. This is final."
Speaking of the position last evening, Mr Bliss said that the price of Is 3d had not yet been actually gazetted, thongn tMr McDonald had been asked whether he would bring an action for profiteering if lo?al dairymen sold at Is Gd. Mr Bliss expressed tho opiji'on that if Is 3d were to continue as the wholesale price, there would inevitably be a shortage, of milk here. Dairymen co-iild not afford to sell at that price, and, in fact, some of them were already going out of winter-milking.
