REVIEW OP THE MARKET.
Tlia e13.r0 market Las been quiet during tip? past week -with more tollers than buyers on "Changie. Possibly the icccnt slackness of the local market has been a reflection of the depression cn tho London mailiet, where investors have been unency in rcspect to the Government's intentions regarding new taxation and the proposed capital lory.
There las bees a fairly steady demand throughout tbi week for war loan, boih bonds and inscribed. It was anticipated in most quarters thai the Government would not propose another "free of income lux loan, and the Prim® Minister's latest announcement lias confirmed that opinion. As lons' us the rate of income remains high, the various war loans free oi income tax provide good investments for companies and individuals liable to pay large amounts in tax, ;md tho present demand is prckab.y dtis to thi'3 fact.
Most investors in debeuturo securities are 1 looking for investments returning r.t Ica&t 5J per cent., and therefore nrany local bodfcs are finding it di&cult to place long da-ted debonture-s ca-rrving Si per cent, per aunuin, which is. the rate fixoa by the Government. Nevertheless there is a daal cf idle money or money on deposit at law ratt-3 of interest, in the country, and tho new Public Works loan of £'2,000.000, with a currency cf ten years, should be lully subscribed. Considerably higher rates are offered in Australia and the New Sontn Wales Government is offering a loan of .JK,000,000 with -a currency of five years iu ah per cent, free of both' State end Commonwealth ineojno taxes. ■ _ it No sales of Bank of Australasia "fractions have. l>sen reported durin.j tho week, and there are sellers at w:tli no declwcd buyers over £15 iis- compared with sales ft £18 a wo?k .iro. GENERAL NOTES. A leading- Melbourne soft-goods house baa received • a cable message from its London agents advising tiini there lias been an advance of 75 per cent, in the price of satin quilts, and 50 per cent, advance in honeycomb quilts, on the prices which were ruling in London on March let. The Australian meat contracts with tho Imperial Government "were on a different time basis to those of Now Zealand. The lattor contracts, as at first -worded, were to expire last. June, but the Imperial Government agreed to an extension of twelve months. Tho Australian contracts were for Iho period of the war and three months after. This has been interpreted to mean that tho Australian contracts will expire throe months after the signing of peace with the laat belligerent—Turkey. So that the contracts liavo still at least three months to run, and may have much mote, according ns Turkey hastens or delays signing tho Treaty. Someone recently suggested to tho Australian Prime Minister that he should endeavour to terminate the contracts on Juno 30th n-ext. This wes deemed eo inimical to tho interests of the industry that an Australian conference of. growers and exporters was called in recently, and it was agreed vrith the Prime Minister . tha t the contracts should bo carried out as originally arranged. "Tho abnormal conditions prevailing in tho overseas meat trade, jus pointed out by tho New Zealand Prime Minister (remar'-a tho secretary of tho Victorian Graziers' Association) make it desirable to Australia that the contracts should bo continued. To soo this, one has only lo bear in mind the immediate outlook for New Zealand producers. As tho contracts eland, there is. a sure ealo at a certain price for Australia's surplus meat." Hoare, Millar, ond Company, Limited, in their jute report dated Calcutta, April 24th, state that the activity of speculators in hecsians has continued, and prices have considerable fluctuations in oonFcqticrnce. Tho demand for wide width cloth from consuming countries -has been active, and mills have little left to eell before t!>o end of ScDtembcr. In standa.nl widths, mills huvc mado iyoly largo sale 3, but the bulk of material is held by local specttlators. Sowings of this year's crops are practically complete, and reports of tin* crop arc, "on the whole, very satisfactory. Owing to the high prieo to which raw silver ro3-> come months ago, it wa<s practically determined by tho Federal authorities to issue 5s notes. A design was approved of, and a bill was drafted for procentation to Parliament to authorise tin* issue. The Acting Federal Treasurer (Sir Joseph Cook) state*! la-st. week that, a.s the price of raw silver had falleu to about ,5s an ounce, it would no loroaper be necessary to proceed with the proposal to issue notes of a email denomination. At Ea it would just bo possible to continue coinage witlvout loss, but thciro would seem, to be a probability o' a further decline in the prico of raw material. GENERAL MERCHANDISE. GROCERIES, Etc. The New Zealand manufacturers of "paper and paper bags have again increased tho p.ricc. At present they are -unable to execute orders on hand. There is an increase in. the price of Brasso, and quotations niov." are 22s for largo and 10"? 10d for small. Blacksliine stovo polish, is now quoted at lCs lOd. A leading brand of linoleum polish has advanced in price, and is now quoted at 15s. Clothes lines, along with other sundry rope manufactured goods, have, according 'to Mesar? Advicea to hand arc to the effect' that American- quotations for canned fruits show an average landed cost of about 35s a dozen i<n- choice, 30s for standard, and 22s fox teconds. Sir Francis Bell, Commissioner of State Forests, has forwarded a. reply to j the • representations made by dairy factory i delegates and managers, regarding the n-occs-eity of prohibiting export of whito. pine. In liia letter he point® out that it Iras not bsea found practicable to entirely prohibit tho export of -white pice, owing to the following facta:—Firefly: That a amount of timber had been cut .on. land ■which had to b® cleared in connexion with tho greatly increased eettlement that h-aa token plaoo in the last few year®, in districts where there was a comparatively email demand, or no demand for timber which would, therefore, have been wasted, had it not been exported; secondly: That a large proportion of tho timber produced, from whito pice log is of inferior quality, for which in Nov.- Zealand there is only a srna.ll demand, while in Australia, there is keen demand for it; 'thirdly: That there had been a ehortage of coastwise shipping from West Coast porla to northern port si thus preventing tho local ueo of much of ihy timber produced.
It 13 also pointed ov.t that tiion°li liio export of whit© pino Las cot been entirely prohibited, it has, trader the Board of Tracts regulations, been limited to a maximum of 40 per cent, of the total production, and in addition, znoet cases, whore licenses to 'cut oi eell standing- timber on public and private lands arc iasued under regulations made imoer authority of scction. ?A of tho war legislation, and the Statute Law Amendment Act, 1918, there ia now imposed a ccntl.'uor that no no of the timber cut imtv "be esy-cicd. -
