CANTERBURY PARK T.C.'S WINTER MEETING. After tho very boisterous weather experienced during tie pact week the Canterbury Park Trotting Club was distinctly fortunate in bein-r favoured with a fino day for tho opening of its Winter Meeting, which took place at Soekburn yesterday. There was a noticeable touch of winter in the air, but the almcet entire absence of wind made matters fairly comfortable for spectators. On acoount of the recent heavy rains the going was very dead, and nothing approaching re- ' cord time was accomplished in any of tho races. Huge crowds patronised the special trams running to the course, and the countryside was well represented. He principal event, the Paparoa Handicap, was in many trays a disappointing race, for Stcckado and Gleaming cleared out from the field at the start and had the race to themselves, the former scoring a popular win. The finish, of tho Railway Handicap was remarkably close. Four horses finished almost in line, and only the judge waa in a position to say what had won. Though only two favourites won during the afternoon, speculation was very brisk, iae totalisator investments amounting to £38,96}. 10s, as against £25,508 on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £18,453 10s. Following are details of the racing;— FIRST AMATEUR HANDICAP (in harness), of 100 flora, and bracelot valued at 15 eova; second 20, third 10. For nnhoppled trotters only. Amateur drivers. l|m. 8. R.
