The oat harvest is ! well forward, and already a fairly ' large (juantitv is in stook, while many slacks are making their appearance. A Masterton resident—a returned soldier—lias invented a system for constructing fencing posts which is lilceJv to have a revolutionary effect upon the whole system of fencing. His proposal is to manufacture posts in concrete. reinforced with a materia] other than wire. Ilv an ingenious process he also does away with the necessity for inserting staples in the posts. This will mean an immense saving in tho cost of manufacture. An exhibition of the post will be made at the forthcoming Masterton Show. KAIKOURA. The election of a member of tho County Council, to represent tho Clarence Riding, resulted in Mr Arthur Evans receiving -l-"i votes, and Mr DaviJ "Boyd 3R. Mr Frank Monk was the recipient of n handsome decanter cabinet on Saturday from tho residents of Puhipuhi. Mr Monk served as member for the Clarenco Riding on tho County Council for seventeen years. He was a most energetic member, an enterprising settler, and a good neighbour, and was instrumental in having a telephone installed among tho settlers. Thoso present wished Mr Monk and family happiness in their new sphere. They nro proceeding to Auckland, having retired from farmirig. CUIiVEBDEN. Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane is gazetted a member of tho Culverden Domain Board, in the place of the late Mr William McXaught. KAXAPOI. The pnpilfi of St. Paul's Presbyterian Sunday school, with their teachers and parents, numbering about 130, left by tho 9 a.m. train on Saturday for tho Christchurch Gardens. A pleasant day was spent, games and other forms of recreation being indulged in. BELFAST. At the tliirty-second annual meeting of Court Star of Belfast, A.0.F., 0.R., Bro. E. 11. Ash by presided. Tho receipts for the evening amounted to £45. The election of officers resulted as follows:—O.R., Bro. E. H. Ashby (re-clccted)); S.C.R., Bro. C. C. Clarke (re-elected); S.W., Bro. G. E. The Ashburton "Wills street Methodist Church, which has been closcd for some months, owing to tho amalgamation with tho Baring square Church, has been purchased by tho Ashburton Mission, and when renovated will bo used as a mission hall. Tho building, a portion of which has stood for forty-six years, is in every way sound. Prior to Mr 11. S. Forsyth leaving for Timaru, ho was met by tho committee of tho Ashburton County Racing Club, and made the recipient of a nicelv-bound Racing Book cover, on which was embossed his monogram in gold. The president, Mr J. C. N. Grigg, in making the presentation, referred to tho good work Mr Forsyth had dono for tho I club as a steward, and as a committee- ] man, as well for sport generally. i The General Committee of the Ashburton Domain Carnival met on Friday, tho Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith) presiding. The secretary reported that tlio gross takings were £194 9s Bd, and tho expenditure £'48 7s. At tho concert in aid of the fund the gross receipts were £-jl 9s, and the expenditure .£ll 9s 6d. It was recommended that xho Domain Board at once proceed with tho construction of a paddling pool, and extra swings _ for the children. The matter of a swimming bath received some attention, but the question was left in abeyance. Mr John "Watson (secretarv) was heartily thanked for his services In connexion with the function.
