An amendment, thnt tho matUr be left to the incoming Council was earned. TOURNAMENT IRREGULARITIES. ** TO THE XDITOB OV "THE PRESS." Sir,— Amongst tho hundrfrJ* of competing bowlers there is considerable discussion, with >■ distinct degree of adverse criticism, of the Tournament Committee on the question of substitute*. It is alleged that in defiance of the printed rules and conditions of »h© tournament, a ••ami, of permitting a well-tmown player from Otago to play as a substitute in the pairs competition'has occurred; also that n«t conlent with this combination of two of the best players from the North and South Island, the' pair was further fctrengt'noncl by tho southern "substitute" shipping tho northern team. The facts of the case nro perfectly ••'ear, %s any bowler may seo who refers to his tournament programme. _ Rulo i of the general conditions (page 5) ic#ds!— "No ciianging of playors will l>e allowed except in cases of illness or enforced alieenre. in which cose a substitute riav Ixs fppoiated by, or subject to the approval «.f, tho Tournament Committee or its appointee." I have the definite assurance of several members of tho Tournam-iit Committee thnt in the ease in question no approval had Im-«mi granted, also that such an arrangement of tho vair would certuiuly not have been passed Uv the committee. "It i» the distinct duty of the bowling authorities to deal vigorously with any irregularities, and also to frame wuch definite conditions governing luturo poire matches, ■that two players from different clubs could v.ot plav together. As the pleasure or five in- <»ix hundred competitors is involved, I sincerelv trust that in the best intereeta of bowling, the Council will handle the matter with promptness, tact, and skill.—Yours, etc., OLD COMPETITOR. January 10th. |Mr K. A. Summer*, president of 'tie Dominion .Bowling Association, whom ve invited to make a statement if he cured ti do so, on the allegations referred to in the abore letter, sari that lie did not care to make any comment on un anonymous letter. Tho Tournament committee, he stated, had received no protest Teirurding the allegations mado in tho letter, and no action could be . taken unices a protest was made.—Ed. "Press."]
