MB.. Rangiora. — llop beer. Ingredients. sozs hops, S gallons of water, '.'{lbs of brown sugar, three or four tahlespoonfuls of yeast. Method: Boil hops and water together for 45 minutes, add the sugar, and when dissolved strain into a bowl or tub. As soon as it is just lukewarm add the yeast, let it work for 4S hours, then skim well and strain into bottles or a small cask. Cork and let it remain for a fendays before using. I have no recipe for herb beer. Any reader oblige?

In the past any woman was admitted to tlio St. Helens Maternity Hospital the earnings of whoso husband did not exceed £4 per week. Owing to the increase in the cost of living this limit has been raised to a-weck. The matrons have discretionary power in regard to the mothers of large families up to a limit of £0 a week. Tho Health Department also cives free treatment at its own maternity hospitals'to the wives of soldiers for twelve months after tho soldier's return. It lias boon decided to extend this free treatment to those treated in tho maternity wards attached to tho general hospitals. Mrs C. C. Taylor, I'apanui, has gone to Wellington, to meet her husband, who is returning in tKe Kigoma. Mrs 11. Baxter, "Chatewood.'' Papanui, lias gone to "Wellington to meet her son, Captain Robert H. Their Excellencies tho (tovercorGeneral and the Countess of Liverpool gave a garden party at "Elmwood" on Saturday afternoon. So well sheltered are the lovely grounds of the Vicc-regnl residence, that tho unpleasantly high wind blowing -without was not felt in the shady flower-bordered walks, or on the lawns, with their welcome shade of big trees. The guests watched the tennis tournament which was in progress throughout tho afternoon, and had afternoon tea in a marquee, which was erected adjacent to the tennis court s Their Excellencies received beneath a big tiee on the lawn. The Countess of Liverpool was frocked in white French voile patterned with a design in heliotro|K: flowers, the collar, culfs and belt being of heliotrope voile, while the nccompanyiug hat, of white georgette, was lined with heliotrope and wreathed with white ostrich feathers caught in front with a pink and heliotrope posv. CANTERBURY BOWLING CLFB. "PRESIDENT'S DAY/' The picturesquo greens of the Canterbury Bowling Club presumed a galaliko appearance on Saturday afternoon, when the president (Mr E. A. Summers) and Mrs Summers gavo a large and brilliantly successful at home in honour of the visiting bowlers. Fine weather favoured txie function, and crowds of interested spectators. in whiah hidies predominated, cageriy watched the matches from the pavilion and terraces, their light summery toilettes and sunshades showing to much advantage in the emerald setting. Flags floating over the pavilion and round the lawns, and the sweet strains of Mr Albert Bidgood's orchestra added a further touch of colour and brightness to the generally attraction scheme of things Afternoon tea was served in the billiard-room and on small tables decked in the club colours, crimson and black, invitingly disposed around the terraces. The tables in tin? Cavilion were artistically arranged with owls and vases of sweet peas ai:d carnations, and seasonable flowers bunked all the embrasures, and were disposed wherever possible. Mrs M. Harnett (wife of a former president of the Club) shared the honours with Mrs Summers in entertaining, and numerous girl helpers were indefatigable in ministering to the comfort of the guests, of whom it was estimated ttyere were well over a thousand. Following tea ice creams were handed round, and were much :ippredated. Mrs Summers wore a dainty frock of white silk with panels inserted with filet lace, and a small black hat. with sand-coloured crown, wreathed with miniature ruses. Sirs M. Harnett wore a grey taffeta toilette and black list-re straw hat banded with lotus blue . ribbon, the brim wreathed with champagne ostrich feathers. Amongst the visiting howlers' wives were Mrs Collins, wife of Colonel Collins, Wellington, who was in black soft satin and hat to match, with a touch of deep blue. (iOLDEN WEDDING. On Thursday last, Bth ir.st.. a large numiier of friends and well-wishers ;isieinbled at tlie residence of Mr and Mrs Wm. I'hilp, Winchester, the event being the celebration of the anniversary of their wedding which took place in Cornwall. England, fifty years from that • late. The large marquee which had been erected for the occasion near the residence was tilled with a happy throng of old folk and young, among whom wito many members <,t' the family. The happy pair were the recipients of numerous congratulations and good wishes from the assembly, and after the loyal toast had been honoured, Mr W. Niles. soil., of Temuka. proposed the health of the bride and bridegroom, Mr and MrWm. I'hilp, and expressed the wish that the couple would long be .-pared further to eniov their hapny married life. Mr I'hilp made a hearty response to the kind tiling that, had been said of him and his wile, and thanked the romparv for attending that day. and thus showing the good fellowship which existed between iheni. lie had hail fiftv vears of happy married I iff. and could* look back upon that space of time v. itti pleasant memories. Mr ami Mrs Philp were the recipients of a numlx-r 01 handsome presents. In conjunction with the above, in the afternoon, a marriage was celebrated at Si. .John'-- Anglican Church, Winchester, bv the Rev. A H. of her father, the hymn. "The Voice that breathed o'er Eden"' was ving. The bride was attired in a becoming dress ot white crene de chine, with the usual veil and orange blossoms, and the bridesmaid. Miss K. Eager, of Whangarei. wore a dress ot white silk, with a white hat adorned with pink and blue flowop. Mr Stan. Niles ac ted as Wst man. The wedding breakfast was laid in the same marquee as that used for the golden weddinu previously, and the usual toasts were honoured. The presents were numerous and valuable. Subsequently, the happy couple left for the south, the bride's travellinc dress being of brown serge, with a light fawn hat.
