A young man, W. Machin, of 21 Rugby street, was swimming outsido tho breakers about 4.30 p.m., when Mr E. Davins, who was doing patrol duty on tlio beach, noticed that tlio bather was in difficulties. Mr Davies signalled to tho j pavilion, where Mrs D. C. ]>avidson immediately sounded tho alarm, and some members of tho Taylor's Mistake Club took out the reel. Meanwhile, Mr F. Priest, had entered tho water, closely followed by Mr O. Turpin. .A few moments later Mr I>. C. Davidson, captain of tho team, wont in with tho belt life-line. Priest, who is only 1G years of age, lost no timo in leaching tlio man in difficulties, and was almost strangled. Ho kept his presence of mind, however, until O. Turpin reached them both. Priest then signalled to Turpin to let him drift in, but ho was 111 koitip trouble until assisted by F. Stevenson, who had also swum out. Davidson had by this timo reached iiirpin and the subject of tho rescue, and all were quickly hauled in bv the members of tho team.
