TEA AND SMOKING.
TO THE EDITOR OF "TICK I'nEStj.'' Sir, —I am distressed to read that the Presbyterian Church leaders of America have formulated a programme for •worldwide atvolition of cigarette smoking. To my mind tea-drinking is much more harmful. A woll-known medico assures me that nervous gastric troubles are greatly on tlio increase. No doubt this is largclv duo to tho abuse of tea, especially in the case of women folk. Do wo not all know the agitated female who. in moments of stress, rushon _to niako "a cup of tea?" Tea-drinking scorns to bring out all that's vilo in a woman's nature. Have yon ever sat and listened to tho talk of the ladies in our tea rooms? How many times do wo hear rumours of events which, months later, appear in our "Divorco Courts? In most eases it's always Mrs X's fault, because fihe went out to t*»a parties and left Mr X to follow his own devices. Men may talk scandal, but tliev seem to I>e more morciful. Possibly their tea-drinking is ameliorated bv nicotine and eren John BarleycornSow. ladies, the price of tea is ever on the rise. Conldn't yon reduce your seven cups of tea. si day, and t-horcliy regain your sweet, gentle nature, and your youthful complexions? When the Presbvterinnß set alvout doing anything they aro ''verra" much in nam cist, and oefore we know where wo are our cigarettes will liavo gono for ever. Now let's start a counter campaign, and stop tho dear old tea meetings.—-Yours, ptr\. srriiTj smokixo.
