In evidence before the Commission of Enquiry, Mr Callan, hotel supervisor, stated tint the dissatisfaction was duo to the Administration being in favour of tho companies, and against tho whites and in favour of blacks. In ft lessor degreo it was caused by tho endeavour made to purchase the Territory. Indignation -meetings -were held frequently, but no satisfactory reply ■vvas ever received.
" Witness added that Pr. Gilruth denied having any interest in tho. l)aly River mines, and tho Minister s statement to the Territory representatives supported this. Asked if it was thought that Dr. Gilriith's policy wius to introduce Latm races, and that the presence of the foreign element was largely due to l>r. (Jilruth. the witness replied: "W Mr Robert. Toupoin, Mayor of Darwin, answering questions regarding tho foreign element in tho town, said it was Th\ Gilruth's policy to introduce* the Mediterranean races into tn® Territory. During the 1938 riot Dr. Gilruth's efligv was burned. Mr Covacher. managing director for the Northern Agency, Limited, replying to a question as tn tho reason of his effort to get Dr. Gilruth a position where his scientific abilities could bo utilised, said that ho would always uso his influence to secure the son-ices of anyono whoso abilities would prove useful to tho country. He denied approach inp: Dr. Gilruth because ho thought Dr. Gilruth would be pliable in. his hands, and he added that tho connexion between Dr. Gilruth and Vestey's was very slight.
