Lennon, Speaker of the Assembly, and a member of tho Labour Party, as Lieutenant-Governor of Queensland, produced a scene in the Assembly. Mr Barnes. ex-Treasurer. expressed strong disapproval of tho appointment, on the pmund that Mr Lcnnon had endorsed disloyal utterances made bv tlio Cabinet. lie added: "And now, forsooth. ho is thrown upon the State as Eicutonant-Governor on the recommendation of this Government.'' The Chairman ordered Mr Bnmes to ■withdraw the words, but he refused, and wns snspended. Ho left the House amid an unroar as a protest apainst the stifling of freedom of speech.
