COST OF CLOTHES.
« ALLEGATIONS DENIED. (Br Cable.—Press AcaociaUos.—CotiHithi) (Australian and N.Z. Cable AancUtfen.) IX3NDON, January C. Newspapers predict a possible increase in the cost of a suit of clothca to £20, duo mainly, it is alleged, to tho bulk of the best quality wool boing Government controlled in Australia and New Zenland, and to the scarcity of raw material. Sir Thomas Mackenzie, in a letter to tho Press, denies that thero is any con- \ trol in New Zealand, and points out. that the whole of tho Dominion's exportable surplus is sold to the Home Government. There is no scarcity, he says. Stocks on hand, or arriving, amount to P,270,000 bales, which, therefore, -with the new Australian and New Zealand clips, will make 5,/500,000 bales. Therefore the increase in the price of clothes is neither due to the increased post of wool to the Home Government nor to a scarcity. In New Zealand farmera are holding meetings and adopting resolutions condemning the exorbitant prices charged for woollen goods in view of the nriccs thev reI ceive for tho raw material.
