It resulted in the I return of three Nationalists. I preferential voting i CRITICISED. SYDNEY, January 7. There is much disapproving criticism in both Nationalist and Labour circles everywhere over the Sonato system of preferential voting, which resulted in practically giving tho Nationalists a monopoly of the Upper House, that is described as neither jußt nor wholesome. Lal>our is decidedly sore, as on the bulk of the votes recorded tho party would, under tho old system, have won several seats which the preferential system denied them. Other curious anomalies are disclosed. Four New South Wales candidates for- ; 1011<*<! their deposits, including Mr i Gnrling. Nat ionalist., who polled heavily, but failed to secure tho necessary primaries. There were 70,000 informal Senate votes in New South Wales alone. THE REFERENDUM IN N.S.W. ("Received January 7th, 8.20 p.m.' SYDNEY. January 7. The final figures for the referendum i in New South Wales are as follows: — ' For extending the Federal Gorernmint's legislative powers: Yes 259,638 'I No '390,290 { Majority against ... 130,(>58 , For sranting power t-o deal with mcnopolies: Y« 227,098 No 365,657 Majority against ... 138,550 There were nearly 200,000 informal votes.
