EARTHQUAKE IN MEXICO.
MANY DEATHS BEPOBTED. (By Cable—Prcus Awocisticro—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) MEXICO CITY, JnnuaaTy 5. Tho earthquake shook ton Statt>s and destroyed two villages. Several hundred deaths arc reported. The effects of the quake wero felt 500 miles distant. At Orizaba, eighteen miles southeast of the volcano of Citlaltepctel (or Orizaba), a theatre crowd became panic-stricken. Many wero injured while attempting to escape. Many dead are reported at Vera Cruz. ("An earlier message stated:—Scores of people are roported to have been killed by a violent earthquake which affected* many parts of Mexico. Tho centre of tho disturbance is believed to be near the volcano of Orizaba. Orizaba. in tho State of Vera Cruz, suffered the greatest damage. "Wild scenes of panic wero enacted hero. Many natives rushed to tho churches, whero they prayed. Similar scenes of panic occurred at Toluca. Cuernavoca, and Pncbla. Mount Orizaba is a volcano on the edge of the Mexican plateau, eighteen miles north-west of Orizaba. It has an altitude of 18,314 feet.] ,
