BRITISH POLITICS.
i the labour vote. (By Cable—Prea* Association —Coprright.) ' (Australian mid N.Z. C&blo Association.) LONDON, January 5. , Tho result of tho Spen Valley byelection, coupled with tho fact thnt at tho last nine by-elections_ tho Labour vote has increased from 33,<2- to 97,473, whereas the Coalition vote has fallen from 50,477 to 79,01)0, raises the question in several newspapers of whether Labour is ready to assume tho rcsponsibilitv of government. }lr'Winston Churchill maintained, m a speech at Sunderland, that tho party was now in a period of development when it was quite unfitted for tho ta&k, and would come hopelessly to grief. Several prominent Labour leaders recently admitted that the party was not yet readv for the Treasury benches, and did not desire office lollowing the next olection. Moderate men in the party tliink that a preliminary period as a stronz Opposition would better fit them . for power. ;' Tho general result of tho by-elections , seems to indicate a weakening of tho > Liberal Party as a political force, i coupled with the eventual coalescing of i the present Coalition into a Centre ? Party attracting all shades of political 5 thought except Labour, and, perhaps, extreme Tory, which might form a F party of the"Right under Lord Robert | Cecil. ' If you have a cold in the head uso the Nazol Inhaler. A few spiffs and • you notice a marked relief. Keep Jt I up and the cold soon vanishes. *
