BOWLING.
NOTES BY "SKIP." The Dominion of Now Zealand BotrV ing Association's seventh annual championship tournament commences next Thursday. Already several of tho visitors have arrived, and no doubt they will avail themselves of tho opportunity of "trying 7 ' some of tho locals greens Tho executive havo wisely decided in commence with tho Pairs gam en m Thursday morning, and three garnet will be played the first day, and two tho second, after which sectional tie» will lx< played, thus occupying tho time till .Saturday forenoon. At (lie Canterbury Clab's green next Sr.turday the annual North v. Sonth Island match will bo played, and at the s.une time the president of the Dominion Association (Mr K. Summers), with Mrs Summers will entertain the \i>: tors and ladv friends to afternoon te.i. Next Monday morning the rinkgames will I\s eo'mnieneod, and t.hc.-e will oc upy three days, while Thursday. loth, will lip devoted to the .seitii-lin.iU i'f both the rinks and pairs. The w|v-1< of .Friday, the lGth, will be devoU\l to s,_ and on Saturday the tourn.i mem will conclude with the final game.-. i hero will N> over lour hundred * ••-'ting bowlers in C'hristchiiri'h diirint: the tournament. There aro eighty rink-' entered trom outside the prmince, and ."■everal pairs have entered who are nut competing in any of tho other pun.-* In glancing through the names of the players on t lie programme, it. is notice able that many oi the ohl champion* aie again to take part. It is main rears since Coorge l'nnn>, tho veteran .\ewtown player, won his first tonrna trent, and he is probably as well known in the South Island as he is in the -North. He has a team enteral, and it wi I be interesting to watch how tho old general faies. The first winner of the Dominion tournament, J. I'ortoous ("Wellington t lulO, is again a competitor, and he has a very solid rink with him. The run-uor-up ihat voar (3014) was Fountain (lloslyn Club). Tliis plnyer is now resident in Wellington, and he is skipping a rinl- from the Wellington Club. • I Nash, of l'almerston Xorth. who won ir. Auckland in 1915. will again renew ncnuamtanco with manv of his old friends. "Teddy" Hill, "of To Iliwi, who played off the final with A ash, has brought down something very "hot-." His lead, Bert Warwick, who was in Wyllio's rink which won the Northern Association tournament, m If 12, is recognised ns one of the finest players in the position in tho Dominion. His No. 2, Truscott, is considered a very pood player, while Victor Casey, as 'lis third man, needs no introduction to Dominion bowlers. Ho lias been for uiany years recognised nB one of tho finest No. 3'p in tlie Dominion, and it may hero bo mentioned that he has come from Sydney specially to take nart in this tourney. 'Teddy" Hill Ims been a consistent performer for many years, and it has been his ono ambition to win this tournament. Ooltman, tho winner, and Spfllcr, the runner-up of tho Wellington tourna~ ment in 1017, havo both got rinks entered. Spiller, who is all old United player is now resident in Auckland, and he will skip a Itcmnera rink. C. Russell Smith, who established a record in 1018 in l»einpj tlio president of tly Dominion Association, and also tlin winner of the tournamonl tho samo year, has again entered a rink. Faulkner, who played No. 3, is again associated with, him, and tho combination is recognised as a very good ono. There aro mnny other first-class players who havo for years taken part in tournaments all over tho Dominion, again taking port. Fookes, of Cariton, who, as a two or three-year-old player, won the Northern Association Banner, bringing a rink down. Maxwell Walkers name is too well known amongst bowlers in the Dominion to need any comment. Fisher and Masson, of Carterton, are also well-known players. while G. H. Saywoli, of Foiidmg, has been a prize-taker on more than one occasion. _.W Wyllie, who is dapping a To Hiw. rink, has got together a very fmo rink. His lead. Honldsworth, and his [ third man, Ferguson, oro good, steady bowlers, and have on to vera I occasions i given an excellent account of themselves in tournament play. Forguwm played off tho final in tho Singles here against Fountain in 1916. and tho following year ho again played off the final in the pairs at Wellington, when J. J. Martin and A. Sawver, the GisWne players, beat him. Wyllie is n „ old tournament winner. His last win was in 1912, when ho won tho banner for Newton Amongst tho Wellington players are Tom Churchward and T. Ballingcr, both weil-known bowlers, and in their day amongst tho top-notchors. Sam Potter, who has mado a name for himsolf during tho past few yeare, will probablj bo one of the hardest men to beat in the tourney. His rmk is a splendid one, comprising, ns it docs, Roberts, Gicnfcll. and w. Thompson. Tho Thorndon Club are only sending down one rink, but it is a fcood one David Munro and M. O. V. Dimock, who havo been associated for many years, are at tho right end, while the load and second playor are of excellent canbro. Amongst tho local rinks thero are some veiy fine combinations, and, to my mind, Dr. Sandston'B stands out prominently. Evtjry man is in his proper place, and tho rink should give an excellent account of themselves. WoolFs rink is also a very good one, and AUnutt—well remembered by tho oluer generation of bowlers—who playl.* i! n • famous "teachers" rink i 1 j prac^,ca uy won every match, they played nearly sixteen years ago, will bo a tower of strength. Thero aro some Sno sporting rinks entered but I would not like to predict which club will havo tho honour of flying tho banner from their flog pole.
