January '2. \ The doath is announced of Feng Kuo j Chang, formerly President of Cliina. | Tho death is announced of Mr Tlu.niss : Thompson, cine of Pa tea's oldest- and most respected settlers, at tho age of 63 years. The deceased, who was born in Durham, England, came to tho Dominion about 3D years ago, and was for a number of years engaged in tho frozen moat industry in that district. 'Ihe late Mr Thopjpson was an enthusiastic sportsman, being a cricketer and bowler of considerablo merit. The doath occurred on Thursday, at Kaikoura, of the Rev. Father Morris. Tho deceased priest was educated m tho Mavnooth College, Ireland, and arrived in New Zealand about five years ago He had now enjoyed good health, and his death at the early ago of thirtv vears was not altogether unexpected.' Ho was an ardent assistant in patriotic works in Kaikoura, and a zealous coadjutor of tho Rev. Father Kelly. Mr W. J. Rainbow, FJj.S., F.E.S., entomologist at tho Australian Mimeum at Sydney, died recently. Ho Ferved an apprenticeship on tho Wangantn "iloraid," hut his heart -was never in liis work, inserts being his hobby. 110 was regarded as tho leading authority i on araneidre in the Soutliern Hemisphere, and published <T7 scientific j papers dealing -with original research into tho life liistorv of hithorto unknown or undescribed scorpions and spiders. "Bug" Rainbow, as ho was known to his' fellow-apprcnticcs, was held in affectionate regard by a largo number of friends and fellow-workers in Now Zealand. The death occurred at Wellington last week of Mr William Thomas Wil- ■ son, assistant locomotive foreman at . Thorndon railway yards. Tho lato Mr i Wilson had boon formerly connected t with tho Amalgamated Society of Rail- . way Servants for a period of about 25 , years, and had attended every confer- ; enco called by tho socicty. Ho was . president on two occasions, and tho last time for a period of four years. For v a number of years ho represented tho J whole of tho Second Division in tho North Island upon tho ltaihvays Appeal t Hoard. On several occasions ho was a s member of tho Government Railways , Appeal Board in tho establishment of ' which he was prominent. Ho was held in the highest esteem by memWrs of all branches of tho service. Ho leaves u widow and a largo family.
