Cathedral Chimes, Trir Pointer, and Admiral Wood were bracketed on tho totoliaator.

This race produced one of the finest contests ever ecvu in Canterbury, und all through tho uxcitcment v?ue intense. Sympathy delayed the start for a few ininutcn, but eventually all the competitors went away to their lie 11a. Sympathy was perhaps a fraction of u second slower than tho rest, whilo Erin's Queen and Vice-Admiral were the quickest off the mark. Sympathy held command going out of the straight, with Lord Minto und Vice-Admiral following, and' Albert Cling iu a nice position, whilo Trix Pointer, on the rails, and Cello Sydney Wilkes were racing together. Going down the back Erin's Queen brake, and lost her position, and A gat ho j broko his hopples and retired. At this stago Lord Minto was leading from Sympathy, Albert Cling following just in front of Trix Pointer, Mintson,' and Cello Sydney Wilkes, whilo Admiral Wood and Cathedral Chimes had improved their positions, the formor pacing very well. Going down the back tho sccond timo Albert Cling and Lord Minto were in front, with Admiral Wood, Cathedral Chimes, and Sympathy together next, and Cello Sydney Wilkes apparently in a bad position on the rails. At tho top of the straight there were at least nino horses with a winning chance. Onoe in tho straight Albert Cling, Cora Dillon, and Cathedral Chimes were each being hailed as tho winner, but McLennan found an opening, and shot Collo Sydney Wilkes through. From this out the Harold Dillon horse went on, and in a great finish won by half n length from tho fast finishing Trix Pointer, who got up in time to beat Cpra' Dillon by a neck. The Greymouth Trotting Club opened Nils Summer Meeting to-day in excellent weather and in tho prceenoo of a large attendance. Speculation was brisk, and tlero was plenty of money for the greater number of the horses that faced the starter. Tho track was slow, end fast times were out of the question, but the racing wse interesting, and some good finishes were witnessed. First and wcond favourites wero very successful, the dividends throughout the day being small. Henry Traccy. Never Will, Pet«»r Nash. Imperial Boy, Wairoa Belle, and Cole Drift declined their enjjaeemccts in tho Guinne*a Handicsp. Sal Pointer wm favourite, with Marie Lloyd and Carrr On the beat-backed o{ the others. £al Pointer refused to strike a gait, and practically took no part in tho nvce. "With tho exception of Roe® Trace}*, the others £avo a poor display. Bloom and Prudish showed speed in patches, but went to a break Tcpcoiedly when under pressure. Simple Peter did not show lo the same advantage in eaddlo as harness, and gave n very indifferent display. Fernmoor was sent out the hottest favourite of tho day in the Dnsh Handicap, and after making a bold bid for eupremary, failed by a small mugin to do(oat Dorecn Dillon. Those two pt»o tically had the race to themselves, with Hickorywood third. Tho placed division we*« (ren out in tho Dominion Handicap earlier ill tho day, but this time occupied different positions. Nevertheless, they showed most consistent form. Roosevelt displayed speed in patches, but failed to etav on. Red Prince was never prominent, whilo Fanny Dillon, who w«» soro, broko badly at the start, and lost all her handicap, but showed a fine turn of spood when, she did go. . The scratching pen was freely used m the Electric Handicap, Carol, Dick B, Hotrry Tracy, Golden Pippin, Buck's Head, and Mario Lloyd being the eleventh hour withdrawals. It waa an interesting race, as at different stages Woodland Roso, Tho Monkey, Rewanui, and Loowood held winning chances. Under punishment Leewood responded gamely, and with a clear run. on the outside of the field, eoored comfortably from ITio Monkey, and gavo B. Jardcn his ftcond win in succession. Tho Monkey paood a much better race with the weight up than he did early in tho dny in harness, ond paid a elightly better dividend lhan the winner. Rowamii got a bad passage. He was badly ridden in tho home etrctch, «nd, better handled, would havo won, as sho showed more speed than anything else in the race. Maryhill waa well beaten at the end of seven furlongs. Lady Somoroot did not leave tho mark. Woodland Rose was always well placed, but failed to stay on at the business end of the race.
