LYTTELTON REGATTA.
YESTERDAY'S REVIVAL. i c 1 POOR ATTENDANCE OF PUBLIC. • After a lapse of frttir Tears, uuo to! , war conditions, tho timo-honourcd Lyt- • telton Regatta tv-ns nvivod yesterday. * Tt was, howover, but a shadow of its , former solf, tho attendance of tho pub- ; lie Loing comparatively meagre, very | ' littlo larpcr, if anything, than on nn j ordinary holiday. only a see-; tion of thn community know that the ! regatta had been revived, and the cominitteo wo ill d havo been -well advised K> i : have piven tho affair more publicity J , than it received. A frequent train service was run by tho Kiailway Depart- j ltiont tliroughout the day, and though, the numi>er of passengers carried in the! morning was comparatively small it increased considerably as tho day wore on, numbers of people beinn; tempted to journey to port when the threatening attitude of tho weather during the early morning gave way to more genial conditions. In all 7000 passengers were earned on the railways as against 11,000 on the occasion of the last regatta. Clouds fJrimmed the sky throughout the day on t.he city sido of the hi lis, and an unpleasant wind blew, but at port tho conditions overhead wore next to ideal, and though the nor'-easter blowing raised a nasty jobble in the outer harbour, adding, however, to the sport of the yachtinc and motorboat events, insido the mole where the rowing races wero held tho water was like a mill-pond. No swimming Tares wero held this year, but there were tho usual land events. Owing to ihe nbsenco of a suitable ve&ol, in f.yt, there was a dearth of shipping in port yesterday, no flagship was available, consequently tho Lyttelton Marine Band played a programme of music on tho Gladstone pier. Several marine excursions were run during tho day, and numbers of people availed themselves of the opportunity of securing ii "blotv." In tho evening tho principal event was a torchlight •procession an d fireworks display, under the auspices of tho Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade. ROWING EVENTS. SEXIOK PAIR-OAR.
