HANMER SPRINGS.

TO THE EniTOR OF "THE PRESS."

Sir, —In your leader on Public Accounts you mention an increased expenditure in the Tourist Department, but our splendid asset of tho South Island, Hanmer Springs, is not getting any of it. In fact, there seems to have been a cheuse-paring policy going on for years to cut things ciown to the lowest, whilst in tho Defence Department there have been; squandering. It is only light that our buys should "et the best possible treatment to mnke them -well. But tho civilian population ought to have a claim on Government also, in that suffering humanity should he able to get to ami from the' Springs at reasonable cost. If the Sanatorium has to remain temporary until tho Queen Clary's Hospital is of 110 further ■use to the I>oys, end no further improvement goes on, it will not be wanted. Fiftoen patients at the most can rcceivo accommodation. The management is good, considering the limited accommodation, yet there is too much 'stand attention" about it—i.e., red tape. Sanataria ought to be under the control of either the hospitals, or Health Department) as tourist agents the world over only consider booming tiie beauties of a place. The Cantc-r" bury Progress League might take it up —but they are more taken up with big dividends for the trading community to think of lending a helping hand to those that -annot help themselves. Viny of our medical men extol the curative power of the baths of Hanmer. but so lonir as we have an apathetic neopie, ' Hanmer" will remain dead.— lours, etc.. ' K. KEKR. J't-bri-arv 17th.
