Tho firemen's grievance arose.from the fact that a supply of coal 13 usually taken in for the round tnp from Weatport to Tima.ni and Lyttelton, thence back to the West Coast, I this method entailing extra work for tho fire--1 men when the supply i 3 running low, owing to the fact that the coal has then to bo brought from the farther end of the bunkers and thi3 work must necessarily be done by tho firemen, because the Canopiis does not carry trimmers. .■ What ihe, firemen wanted was that the vessel should be bunkered at every port of call, so that the supplies of coal would never diminish sufficiently to occasion extra work. The vessel's owners contended that no objection had hitherto been raised with regard to the method of bunkering the Oanopns, which lad been in operas tion for a number of years. The principal objection against acceding to the firemen's lequest was that the practice of bunkering at every port would involve unnecessary carriage of coul, as the ship's bunkers would never be empty. It was finally agreed that the vessel would be more frequently bunkered, and on that understanding the. firemen raised no further contention.
Mr L. Beavis, assistant purser on the Manuka, came ashore yesterday. Mr W. P. Long has signed on the Cormna. "as third officer.
