annual meeting. The first annual meeting of the Canterbury Industrial Co-operative Society wae held on Saturday evening in the Trades Hall, presided ever by Mr *<I. Hitchen, president of the Society. In submitting- the report and balance-sheet of the Society, Mr Hitchen said it n-aa a pleasure to report progress in membership and sales during the past quarter, the membership including over 300 families, nnd the sales totalling over £2300, enabling the committee to declare a dividena.of l s 3d in the £, after clearing off ail expenses connected with the formation of the Society. Sir H. D. Acland, one of the founders of the Society and member oi the committee, seconded the adoption of tho report, and said tlioy had good reason to be proud of the progress the Co-op. was making-, and believed there were great possibilities for tho extension of the Society's activities, and efforts to reduce the cost of living, which v.-as one of the objects the Society was out to achieve. He spoko in high terms of rraiae of the president, tho secretary (Mr J j Burrows), and the general manager (Mr j 1 B. Strutters) for tho yeoman service they were rendering to the Societv. The five retiring members „"f the commit —Messrs H. D. Acland, J. Kennedv p \y Taylor, P. Miller, and IT. Hitchen— were elected unopposed as members of the Management Committee. The general manager (Mr J. B.
