DIED OF SICKNESS. Edginlon, E. (H. Eid-ginton, InvcrcargiU, {.) L nomually roporled died of sickness whilst prisoner of war: — McDonald, T. j. (D. McDonald, Edondale) Mr J. S.- Weir, Mt. Pleasaufc, Heathcote, has received advice that his sou, Corporal Robert Weir, who was reported missing on October 26th, is now reported killed in action on that date. _ General regret will be felt when it 's known that Sergeant Joseph A. Thomas, son of i\lr W. T. Thomas, of "Haltliam, and late of Woolston, and •brother of Mr W. L. Thomas, of Fendalfcon, was killed in action on October •''th last. Some doubt was felt at the time as to his case, but from enquiries now to hand, it i» certain Oo.Tond doubt that on that great day of the breaking, of the Hindenburg line lie gave his life for the cause of freedom. For some .years previous la enlisting, Sergeant Thomas had been in the North Island, and had filled valuable positions with great satisfaction , He was secretary to the Hawke's Bay ' Liberal League, and to the late Dr McNab in his successful election campaign. He was also a local preacher of the Methodist Church, and™ great promise of distinction. In addition he assisted in temperance work and for some time was orgauiser in the garner electorate.
