SCHOOL PICTURE SHOWS
AX AID TO EDUCATION
Tbe matter 01 special picture shows for school children was introduced .it Wednesday's meeting of the Auckland Education Board, when Mr H. W\ >S. King presented a report from a committee set up to consider tbe application of the cinematograph to educational purposes. Mr King stated that a series of pictures had been seemed for experimental purposes, and would be shown to tbe committee, head teachers, and inspectors at an Auckland picture theatre 011 Friday, so that it niijibt be ascertained •whether any educational benefits were likely to accrue from the scheme. If, after t-his experimental showing, the committee decided the innovation was likely to be a good one, the Board could then take up the mutter of acquiring a cinematograph plant of its own. The question as to whether the Board or the parents should pay! boat or train fares for pupils attending these special shows gave rise to considerable discussion. The chairman expressed the opinion that the parent i would be quite willing to pay. -The lion. 0. .J. Garland said the Board should do all in its , power to make tbe innovation a miOj | cess, and should pay the fares at first; then.' if the scheme were permanently adopted, this concession could bo withdrawn. This suggestion, did not meet with the approval of other members, Messrs SlcKeuzie and Boddie recording their objection to any such payment. If the parents objected to paying a few pence to support the Board in its experiment. then this was clear proof that the scheme was not worth further consideration . A recommendation to the committee that the pupils' fares should be paid by their parents was finally adopted.
