The French ship Duqoesne w« towed out' to a point about five miles outside the Lyttelton Heads yesterday morning by the steam launch Monica, which was utilised as tug in place of the tugs Lyttelton OJid Purau, neither of which was available The Duquesne passed the ileads about G a.m. She will sail for Port Adelaide to load wheat for i European ports. The liner Briton, for which the Shaw, Savill Company has the agency, is under the command of Captain E. W. Day, who has I with him Messrs C. F. Marriner, .first of- I fioer; D. J. ,Scott, second; H. L. Colville, j third, and R. Longman, fourth; J. Lane, J chief engineer; R. Stevens, second,. J. Carnegie, third; J. Wright, fourth; P. Beach, chief steward; (j.. Fulton,' purser; and' Dr. | Reid, ship's surgeon. This vessel has been under continuous engagement as a troopship throughout the currency of the wax,, and has carried troops to most of the important theatres of hostilities. Fortunately she has never been submarined, although she has been passing through danger zones throughout four years of submarine warfare. The Briton, just prior to embarking' on her present voyage, made three trips from the United States to France with American troops on hoard. She is -to leave Lyttelton for Bluff, where general cargo will be loaded, <and from there she will proceed to Sydney, Oxpa Town, and England. The Te Anuu has been, held up at Gisborae owing to rain. It woo-hoped to despatch the vessel last night for Lyttelton. She is bringing a full load of sheep for - discharge here, after which the vessel will sail for Wellington. The Poherua, after having been bar-bound for some time at Greymouth, left the West Coast port at 7.45 on Wednesday evening with a load of coal for Lyttelton. Her arrival »t this port is fxjvct'd to-day. The Monowai reached Lyttelton yesterday afternoon, but she did not. sail ecrath as expected. The vessel will sail to-day for Dunedin. \ It is expected to hove the Canopus in readiness for despatch from Lyttelton to-day for the West Coast. Yesterday's inclement weather stopped all work on the Lyttelton waterfront except the discharge of mails from tho steamer* Maori and Briton. Captain Aldwell, who was master of the Wahine when she was engaged in the Wel-lington-Lyttelton ferry servioe, is in command of the hospital ship Mar&ma. The Xew Zealand Shipping CompJkny adj yises that the Cnfic left Liverpool on tho 19th I inst., for St. John's, Canada, to load general cargo fcr Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Melbourne, and Sydney. The steamer Tropic left New York last week for New Zealand, and is coming to Wellington direct, via Panama Canal.

Advice has been received by the Shaw, faavill, and Albion Company that the Mamari has arrived at Fremantlo from Liverpool. The Marnari ie due at Auckland about the 14th February, and at Wellington about tho 18th February. She will then come south to Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. The American saiier Henrietta, which left San Francieco about the 2Cth isoveinker ior Wellington, arrived in the stream there early on Wednesday morning. All the crew were reported to bs well, but, in accordance with the new rule, there was to be no communication between the vessel and the shore until nest day. All vessels arriving , from Australian ports will anchor in the Lower xi.arbour to undergo medical inspection. Cable advico received states that the liner Port Melbourne hae left London for New Zealand. The-vessel is coming out in ballast uy way of the Panama. Caul. She should reach the Dominion about the ond of February, and will load at several ports for the United Kingdom. The ITnion Company's steamer Maunganui, st present lying at Port Chahnere, signed on her crew on Wednesday morning, preparatory to sailing on Monday. UNION COMPANY'S NEW CARGO STEAMER. Of the two new vessels just acquired by the Union Steam Ship Company, the on© of 8900 tone deadweight, is a new shij, and was purchased by tho company shortly after she left tlie stocks. She wa« built by the Northumberland Shipbuilding Company. She is a single 6crew vessel, fitted with reciprocating engines, and hae a sea-going speed o£ 12 knots, per hour.
