-■ * POSITION OF MISS THURSTON. engagement TERMINATED. Considerable time was devoted in committee l>v the North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday morning to the position ot Mis. Thurston, matron of the Christchurch Hospital, who has been lor some time engaged on military duties in England. The discussion arose through the receipt of a letter from Miss Thurston in reply to one scut her by the Board. Upon the Board resuming, it was re- ' ported that the following motion , had; been carried:— •'That at the conclusion ot ;Mi.=s Thurston's engagement by the Defence Department she bo given six months leave of absence on full p^y. with a. view 10 terminating her engagement with iho Board." It was also reported that Mr H. H. iSoienscn had given notice to more a motion at the next meeting of the Board rescinding the motion, and inconsequence the chairman had Tilled that no action should be taken .until the nextmeeting. ' . Mr W. J. Waiter said lie wished to oppose the resolution arrived at, on the ground that the Board had not played the game with Miss Thurston. She had been given leave of absence until the termination of the war, and now she was receiving notice. He moved: "That the Board disapprove of the resolution arrived at in committee.'' Mr W. P. Spencer said he un dor stood Mm Thurston went Home to look after Now Zealand soldiers, but that she afterwards secured a better appointment. Mrs "Wilson said she was in charge of j a hospital l'or New Zealand soldiers. There was 110 seconder to Mr Walter's motion, and tho motion that the work done in committee bo approved was then submitted. At the request of Mr Sorensen a division wa.s taken, the motion approving the work done in committee being carr ricd by 10 votes to 6. The division list was as follows:— . Ayes: Messrs J. Andrew, O. Bradley, W. H. Cooper, E. Horrell, F. G. Norton, H. Paterson, W. P. Spencer, tho Hon. R. Moore, and Mesdames Christio and Green. ■ ■ Noes: Messrs S. Andrew, M. Beth'ell, W. Nicholls. H. r>. Sorensen, and W. J. Walter, and Mrs Wilson. The chairman (Mr F. Horrell), in reply to a request by Press representatives, said he could not give Miss Thurston's letter for publication.
