A London message says that Lord Rosebery is seriously ill. Mr W. Cecil Leys, of the editorial staff of the "Auckland Star," returned home from active service in the East, by the Niagara on Saturday. The North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board "yesterday appointed Dr. Griffen medical officer to the Kaikoura hospital, subject to the approval of the Minister in charge of Hospitals. Mr J. U. Collins, formerly a master at Christ's College, and latterly at i King's College, Auckland, who has been in Australia for several months, returned to Auckland by the Niagara 011 Saturday. The resignation of Mr W. McMillan as a member of the Board was accepted with extreme regret by the North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday. Mr McMillan resigned on account of his health. The resignation of Mr H. Rattray as senior dental Burgeon at the Christchurch Hospital was accepted by the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday, with regret. The Hospital Committee were instructed to take the necessary steps to fill the position. Cabled advice has been received that Lieut.-Colonel C. T. Hand-Newton, D.5.0., of the New Zealand Medical Corps, will be leaving England by the Rimutaka for New Zealand, and is expected in Christchurch about the end of March. Mr E. G. Jellicoe. formerly a wellknown Wellington barrister and a cousin of Admiral Lord Jellicoe, arrived in Auckland by the Niagara oh Saturday en route to England. Mr Jellicoe, who is accompanied by Mrs Jellicoe, has been on a tour of America, Japan, the Far East, and Australia. News has been received that Lieutenant R. H. Livingstone, 4th South Staffordshire Regiment, has been gazetted captain from October 24th last. Captain Livingstone left as a private with the Main Body, and saw service on Gallipoli and in France. He obtained his commission in England after serving 12 months with the Royal Air Forces, being twice wounded. He is now attached to Headquarters Staif, 4th Army, under General Rawlinson. A letter was received by the North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday from Mr J. Llewellyn Saunders, dental surgeon at the hospital, who has been away on active service, stating that he did not wish to resume the position, as Be had entered into a partnership, and thanking the Board for its consideration to--1 wards him. The Board accepted the resignation, and expressed its appre--1 ciation of Mr Saunders's services. ' Dr. Will, senior house surgeon at the Christchurch Hospital, has resigned his position, the resignation being accepted by the Hospital Board yester- ' day. The Board expressed great appreciation of the services rendered by .Dr. Will whilst a member of the staff. • Dr. R. L. Mr 1 Fletcher is a former Auckland resident. having lived in that city from 1862 to 1872. H<> was educated at the old Wesley College, of which the' late Rev. J. H. Fletcher, and later his brothei-, Mr John Fletcher, were the headmasters. He is n son of the late Mr Charles Fletcher, who was at one time in business in Auckland, and sftenvftrds settled at the Thames, where he was legal manager of several mines that were well-known in the old! days Mr Fletcher joined the editorial staff of the "Brisbane Courier'' in 1893 and was editor of that journal from IS9B to 1903. During the past IS vears he has been associate editor of the "Sydney Mornrac Herald.'
