FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE BOARD.

t ■ ♦ WORK DECREASING. i {KBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, January 27. The progress report of the Financia 1 Assistance Board for December stacei that, as was to be expected, then has been a great falliug-off in the number of new applications received. Only 141 were lodged, most of their being on account of men who had not embarked. "Many applicants," states the report, ,"have taken advantage of the special provision under the regulations for financial assistance to meet confinement and surgical operation expenses. Under these headings £324 was disbursed during December, that amount being considerably less than that disbursed in the previous month. The Board has power to grant up to £5 for confinement, expenses and £ for £, up to a maximum of £10, on account of surgical operation expenses. "Now that the number of new applications coming before the Board has greatly decreased, it has been found that a Board of three members is able to cope with the work. In consequence. Messrs C. W. Cliilman, M. J. Ivilgour, A. S. Mitchell, and W. G. Morpeth, ceased to act as members as from December 31st, 1918. Mr T. S. Ronaldson will continue to act as chairman of the Board, and will have associated with him Messrs Thomas Wilson and W. E. Bethune. These members will servo in an honoraiy capacity, and hold regular meetings as heretofore."
