« — • A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. New Brighton was cn fcto on Saturday afternoon, tlio occasion being tho North Gala. The afternoon was fine, ulthougli n nor'-wester which epfang up towards tlio close of tho day marred to come extent the comfort of those present. From an early hour tho beach was thronged with a gay crowd of holiday-makers, wiioee summer attire was all the more marked for the reason that there have been 6o few days this summer on which liglit-liued attire has been seasonable. Tlio trams from tho city were crowded, and tlio people were in true gala mood. The fact that tho major portion, of the proooeds were to l>e devoted to a cause all have at heart—that of providing a. Peace MecmoTial (winch in this instance is to take the form of a band rotunda) —was probably another cause contributing to the very large attendance. Two-thirds of the proceeds go to this object, while onothird is to be devoted to another very worthy cause, that of wiping off the debt on tho Lifo Saving Club's paviAn attractive sports programme had been arranged, wltioh included various event/;, ill which all-comers might participate. There were good entries in all instances, and eomo voiy interesting contests wer© witnessed, notably in the aquatio events. There were also numerous side-shows, while the ice-cream, eoft drink, and sweet stalls were liberally patronised. In addition there was a treasure hunt for the children., which was heartily enjoyed, while tugG-of-war, obstacle races, and e reel display were watched with interest. Tho concerts of the Clinstchurch Salon Orchestra were well attended, and were not tinleast enjoyable feature of the proceedings. The gala was officially declared open at o 30 br the Minister of Internal Aflairs, the Hon. G. W. Russell. In the course of his speech Mr Russell commented upon the beauties of New Brighton, stating that it was hi 3 belief that it should be the leading seaside resort of the Dominion. He hoped that the borough would maintain tho progress it had

already made. Mr Russell also remarked on tlio worthiness o£ • tlio object to which the proceeds of the gala would bo devoted.
