FIRE AT ADDINGTON.
6 TELEPHONE CABLE DESTROYED. A fire, which did considerable damage, occurred at tho Post and_ Telegraph Department's store at Addington yesterday afternoon. How it actually started is not quite clear, but it was discovered a minute or two after tho Rungiora train had passed. Several grass fires havo occurred of' late in the vicinity, and their origin has been put down to sparks from the engines of trains. The Railway Fire Brigade was quickly in attendance, and did first-class work in saving the actual builaing-s, although considerable damage was dono to the large stock of cable—about 60 or 70 reels —which was stacked outside. The Citv Fire Brigade was also in attendance. Tho cablo consisted mostly of copper wires enclosed i_n ' ea d and the lead melted, leuving the wires quitd bare. A large amount of damage was done to the cables, and it is estimated that the actual damage done will run into some thousands of pounds, but the exact figures will not be available until to-day.
