—t . + UPPER RICCARTON SCHOOL. During the school holidays, tje Upjier Riccarton School Committee lias curried out extensivo improvements to the school grounds. A considerable area round the school has been asphalted, so that the children, crvn now | assemble and do their physical exercises in much greater comfort than in the past. The water supply for tho school has hitherto been inadequate, but an electric pump has been installed, and for tho luture a plentiful supply of water will bo available. Extra seating accommodation for outdoor teaching is to be provided, and altogether the improvements will be a. great boon, both to the scholars and teachers. The committee has been able to carry out these improvements owing to the generous support given by the householders at the School Fair, held last August, tho proceeds of which were subsidised by the Government. NEW BRIGHTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. I At the last meeting of the New Brighton School Committee there were present—Messrs F. Christian (chairman), C. H. Winny, F. ■ Ward, i-'. bincocK, -Uuxton, C. Henry., and E. Langford. The Board of Education stated it 3 inability to appoint Mr Croes to a permanency on the school stuff. The Board advised that it was paying the cost of clay- ] ins, shiugiing, and levelling the school grounds. Dr. Chesson stated that he could j not agree to the installation of a septic tank j in the school grounds. TKe question of increasing the caretaker's salary was held over till next meeting. On Mr Winny's motion, it was decided to hold the school picnic at the Iliccartou ltacecdurso during February, the Mayor to be asked to declare a public holiday. It was agreed to invite the Breeze's road side school children to join up, and that all children should be carried iree to the picnic ground. It was decided to request the Board to have ■* more permanent structure erccted for the North Brighton Side School scholars. Messrs Ward and Hulme were appointed a visiting committee. SYDENHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the last meeting of the Sydenham School Committee, there were presentMessrs T. Butt-ei field (chairman), Poore, Frayle, MclCeou, Duncan, Slater, and Frioker. Mrs Loney was granted leave.of absence. Messrs Slater, Duncan, and Taylor were appointed a sub-committee, with power to act!* along with the caretaker, to effect improvements to the school grounds. The secretary was instructed to write to the Education Board, drawing attention to the dilapidated condition of the school fences, and suggesting an open fence facing Colombo street, the committee undertaking to supply the necessary shrubs, etc., to make the grounds more like what they should be. The question of holding a school picnio at an early date was discussed, and Messrs McKeo'n and Butierneld were assed to confer j with the headmaster on the subject. Mr j McKeon repoi'Ud having gone through the | schoM building?, arid iouud that during the j vacation they had been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, and the work dor.e in a manner which reflected, great credit on the caretaker.
