The mail steamer Sierra, formerly well known in New Zealand in th© San Francisco mail service, under the Oceanic S.S. Company's flag-, had <a sensational experience in t'.ic. Atlantic about a month previous to the signing of the armistice. The Sierra was requisitioned by the United States Government for transport work, and she was passing through the war zone one stormy night, when a large U-boat crashed into her. The impact tore a big hole under tli® water-line near the stem. On© of the big twin screw? of the Sierra tangled in the superstructure of the submarine, and tho officer on watch states that the undersea craft was lifted out of the water momentarily so that it was clearly outlined. Then it slipped back, and the inevitable phosphorescent trail was observed. One of the Sierra's propellers went into tie U-boat. The propeller's shaft raced , at top speed, doing considerable damage. The rent in the liner was a large one. Despite the closing of the water-tight compartments the vessel was taking in more waer than the pumps could control, and it wne feared she would founder. Luckily the steamer had a quantity of timber in her holds, and the captain had this used to plug tho hole. By this reans the heavy inrush erf water was checked, and this allowed the crew, with other material, tarpaulins, and coal, to construct a bulkhead and keep the vessel afloat. Under one propeller the Sierra limped into the nearest port, €00 miles distant, three days later. SHIPPING- TELEGRAMS. SYDNEY, January 13. Arrived, John Eno, from Dunedin. FREMANTLE, January 23.
