(Received Jnniiary 23rd, 8.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, January 23. The New South Wales Cabinet h;« decided in view of the reported outbreak of influenza at Melbourne to advise all ■ inoculation depots to get into full operation all the machinery that had been prepared. All other precautions considered necessary will bo taken. A special Cabinet meeting decided to ask*tho Federal Government to put into immediate operation, if influonr.a has got into Victoria, which is a Federal State, tho agreement adopted in Novoniber providing that Victoria shall bo declared an infected State, and sill ■'and "traffic, with tho cscepition of goods and mails, bo suspended between Victoria and the other States, and that inter-Stato sea traffic bo permitted only under the strictest quarantine. OUTBREAK EST MELBOURNE. MELBOURNE, January 23. Twelve cases of pneumonic influenza have been admitted into the Melbourne Hospital. Tliree of the cases have ended fatally. MEDICAL OPINION. (Received January 23rd, 8.55 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 23. The Superintendent of the Melbourne Hospital states that cases of influenzal pneumonia hay© been admitted to tho institution since as early as the end of November. During tho past three days several similar though more serious cases have been admitted, and there are now twontv-soven in tho hospital which are undoubtedly influenzal pneumonia, apparently of epidemic character. One of the patients had been engaged unloading a boat from New Zealand. The chairman of the Board of Health says he is not prepared to admit it is Spanish influenza or influenza of tho overseas type. So far only tho pneumonia, not tho influenza, germ has been discovered. Another influenza patient lias died in the hospital. More cases have been reported. Somo are receiving home treatment. CLEAR BILL OP HEALTH FOR FIJI. (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, January 23. The Minister of Public Health has received a telegram from tho chief mcdical officer of Fiji reporting that clear bills of health nave been issued in respect to all the islands. There have been no fresh cases at Suva and Levuka since December 28th, and none in. Lautoka sinccs January 7th.
